British Values and The Prevent Duty

From the 1st July 2015, all schools and childcare provisions must have due regard to the need to prevent people being drawn into terrorism. Although our Safeguarding Policy is generally applicable to those where a statutory duty to protect exists, the principles apply to any concerns around the welfare of children.

Extremism can be defined as
“Vocal or active opposition to fundamental British Values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs; and/or calls for the death of members of our armed forces, whether in the country or overseas’

The Government has defined extremism in the Prevent Strategy as,
“Vocal or active opposition to fundamental British Values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.”
In addition to this, The Counter Terrorism and Security Act also places a duty on early years provides,
“to have a due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.”

British values are a set of four values introduced to keep children safe and promote their welfare – as is the duty of all providers and staff following the EYFS: specifically, to counter
1.Democracy
2.The rule of law
3.Individual liberty
4.Mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

By protecting children in your care, you must be alert to any issues for concern in the child’s life at home or elsewhere. This includes awareness of the expression of extremist views.
